The Aditya Birla Group has proposed an additional investment of Rs 12,000 crore to expand the capacity of its greenfield alumina refinery at Kansariguda in Odisha's Rayagada district, tripling production capacity from 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 3 MTPA. The expansion is expected to reinforce India's aluminium value chain while creating significant employment and industrial opportunities in the state.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, where both sides reviewed the conglomerate's ongoing and proposed investments across the state.

According to the Odisha Chief Minister's Office, the proposed expansion will substantially increase refining capacity and create direct as well as indirect employment. The project is also expected to generate opportunities for local enterprises, contractors, service providers and downstream industries linked to the aluminium ecosystem.

The refinery is being developed by Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group. The original project, with an investment of around Rs 8,000 crore, was planned as a 1 MTPA greenfield alumina refinery. The fresh investment of Rs 12,000 crore will add another 2 MTPA of refining capacity, taking the total proposed investment in the project to approximately Rs 20,000 crore.

The expansion comes at a time when Hindalco is reporting strong operational performance. The company recently posted record consolidated revenue and EBITDA for both the fourth quarter and the full financial year FY26, reflecting robust demand across its businesses despite lower quarterly profit after tax.

Industry observers believe the additional capacity will enhance Hindalco's raw material security for aluminium production while supporting rising domestic demand from infrastructure, renewable energy, electric mobility and manufacturing sectors. The project is also expected to further strengthen Odisha's position as one of India's leading hubs for aluminium and mineral-based industries.

During the discussions, the state government also explored opportunities for future investments by the Aditya Birla Group in sectors including copper refining, technical textiles, advanced aluminium products, paints, jewellery manufacturing and printed circuit boards, signalling a broader industrial partnership between the company and the state.
